{"id":5702,"date":"2023-01-12T19:33:38","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T19:33:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/?p=5702"},"modified":"2023-01-13T14:38:22","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T14:38:22","slug":"jewish-prayer-of-thanks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fargate.dev.torahmates.org\/jewish-resources\/jewish-prayer-of-thanks\/","title":{"rendered":"Incomplete Joy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"block-1a451ffa-2121-49bd-a06b-0be79892c7c0\">In <em>Shemone Esrei<\/em>, we express our great sorrow and longing for the days in which we will finally return to <em>Jeusalem<\/em> once again, with the words: \u201c <em>And let our eyes see Your return to Tzion with compassion<\/em>.\u201d However, immediately following this <em>beracha<\/em>, we give a prayer of thanks to <em>Hashem<\/em>, in the prayer of \u201c<em>we are thankful to You<\/em>\u2026\u201d over the unceasing acts of kindliness which He is continuously performing for us. Why did our Sages see fit to place these two prayers, which express completely contrary emotions, one directly after the other? Why is it so, that in one moment, we are meant to be \u2018broken\u2019 over the loss of the <em>Bais Hamikdash<\/em>. Yet, directly following this, we are to muster our strongest feelings of joy, over all the kindness of<em> Hashem<\/em> which surround us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-49b632b0-5e35-47a1-93a3-7d9238d8c49e\">In the chapter of <em>Tehillim<\/em> known as <em>Al Naharos Bavel<\/em> (137: 4), which we say before <em>birchas Hamazon<\/em>, <em>Dovid<\/em> <em>Hamelech<\/em> expresses, \u201c<em>How can we sing the <strong>song of Hashem<\/strong>, on foreign soil<\/em>?\u201d Thus, we see that even the joy which we experience while singing the songs and praises of <em>Hashem<\/em>, are incomplete at a time in which we are bereft, without the <em>Bais HaMikdash<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2f7c9adc-6327-4bf1-a3c9-ebf66aff5d7e\">Therefore, we remember this thought during <em>Shemone Esrei<\/em>, by expressing our great desire to return to <em>Tzion<\/em>, specifically at the very moment in which we are about to bow in thanks for <em>Hashem\u2019s<\/em> endless goodness which He bestows upon us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-636450ee-e99e-4d91-b0dc-7e848dd85a2c\">(Adapted from the book \u201cPassion for Perfection\u201d, by Rabbi Usher Smith)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Shemone Esrei, we express our great sorrow and longing for the days in which we will finally return to Jeusalem once again, with the words: \u201c And let our [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":5707,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"sfsi_plus_gutenberg_text_before_share":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_show_text_before_share":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_icon_type":"","sfsi_plus_gutenberg_icon_alignemt":"","sfsi_plus_gutenburg_max_per_row":""},"categories":[8,551],"tags":[13],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v15.9.1 -
